Rechargeable batteries (AA) and chargers - my recommendations

If you have been disappointed with the lifespan and performance of your AA rechargeable batteries, I recommend the following:

Buy pre-charged batteries.
These are the newest generation rechargeable batteries which hold their charge when not in use. They are truly amazing. Even though they don't have as much capacity, they have performed better than any previous battery I had. We use them in toys, games, remotes, and very importantly, external camera flashes. When I need to use my flashes, they are always ready to go, even if they have been sitting on the shelf for months (before, I had to charge the batteries before each use).
I know of at least 3 brands, and have several sets of each:

- Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable NiMH AA Batteries, sold on Amazon (click here), but I get mine at Target for the same price. I have not done any scientific testing, but I think these are the best of the bunch.

- Sanyo Eneloop AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries, also sold on Amazon (click here), but I got a bunch at Costco.

- Rayovac Hybrid Battery AA NiMH, also sold on Amazon (click here), but I got mine at Sears.

A good charger is just as important as good batteries.
I highly recommend you buy a smart charger. Your batteries will perform better and last longer. My highest recommendation goes to one of these two:

- La Crosse Technology BC-900 Charger (here), which seems to be the favorite of everyone.

- La Crosse Technology BC-700 Charger (here), which I bought. The only difference is that the BC-900 can charge faster. However, charging more slowly is preferable, so there is really no difference  between the two.
