AVIATION OXYGEN SYSTEM

You will need to use oxygen above 12,500 feet (look up FAA's rules).

When deciding which oxygen system to buy, keep in mind that most of the components come from one company that makes medical oxygen supplies. Therefore, where you get your oxygen system does not seem to matter. The only exception I know of are the cylinder regulators and flow valves.

I read quite a bit about this and decided to buy from Mountain High Oxygen, since their systems and customer service are highly recommended both online and from my pilot friends. Here is the system I got and highly recommend:

XCP Portable O2 System

I opted for the following components:
- MH3 flow meters, easy to use and good up to 18,000 feet.
- Pendant style (versus mustache style) oxymizer cannulas. These are very comfortable and conserve oxygen with a re-breathing system.
- Full pack for the cylinder, which comes with straps for attaching the system safely to the back of the pilot seat.
- AL-647 aluminum cylinder, which holds ~22 cubic feet of oxygen. That's good enough for ~6 hours of oxygen for 4 passenger up to 18,000 feet.
- A regulator adapter (TA-540-AN) because some FBOs only have that fitting.

This system is very easy to set up and use.

I also recommend buying a pulse oxymeter. It's a very small device that measures your pulse and, more importantly, blood oxygen saturation. I bought and like the Nonin model GO2, since it was very highly rated on Amazon (link here), but I am sure others are as good.
