This weekend I joined a great group of
people to conquer Wheeler Peak, the highest in New
Mexico,
at 13,167 feet (4,013 m) above sea level. This is my
second time on the peak, but this time we will camp up
high near the summit ridge.

We started around noon at Taos ski resort
(elevation of 9200 ft or 2800 m). (photo by Paul)

After climbing through the forest, we
came up to some nice views... (photo by Paul)

and took a short break. (photo by Paul)

Flowers were everywhere (That's Paul in
the lead, kicking everyone else's butt).

This is the first glimpse of our campsite
(just below the left snow patch) and the summit ridge in
the far back.

Paul found us a very nice camp spot...

right next to a creek for water supply.

A very cute couple.

John started a fire and kept it going all
evening.

We walked up to a nearby mountain to
watch the sunset.

A mountain chicken (aka ptarmigan).

The light was really nice.

And I was photographing everything (photo

This is what I was shooting. You see the
cloud column inside a ring? Weird.

More flowers and mountains in my favorite
post-sunset light.

Chatting around the fire.

We woke up early and headed for the
summit.

This is just before Wheeler peak. (photo
