You can probably tell by now that we love San Juan mountains in SW Colorado. They are amazing. For this trip, we took the Friday off and headed for Silverton. During the next 3 days, we drove our Xterra to 5 mountain passes over 12000 ft (3600 m), and did several hikes to even higher elevations. The mountains were covered with wildflowers, and the weather changed every five minutes. It was generally cold, so we had winter gear on (and it's the end of July!). Here are the passes we covered: Corkscrew (12,200ft), Hurricane (12,400ft), California (12,900ft), Engineer (12,800ft), and Placer Gulch (12,750ft).

Just packed up our tent and started breakfast.

At a summit near Red Mountain.

Alex is getting his first lesson in foot positioning on steep terrain.

Another summit we conquered.

Here is a snow bank at the end of July. Alex had a blast.

More fun with snow.

On the way to Como lake.

Getting ready for lunch just below California pass.

View down California gulch from the pass.

Wildflower fields on Placer gulch road.

More wildflowers.

We settled for the night in the Animas canyon, and woke up to a beautiful day.

Engineer pass. The views from here were awesome.

We really liked the view here (east side of Engineer pass).

More fun stuff on the east side of Engineer pass.

On the way home, we ate at the Chalet Swiss in South Fork. The food was delicious, and we topped it off with a chocolate fondue (mmm).
